Camp Showbiz 2010

A Letter From Our Executive Director

The approach of spring is always a reminder that Camp Showbiz is just around the corner.  Last year’s camp was the best we’ve had, but we expect this one to be even better.  There are two reasons for my optimism. First, we will add new classroom space this year as we renovate the Kampmann House, a wonderful historic building just behind our theatre.  The second reason is our staff, the teachers who work with your children every day.  Every teacher who leads a class is a professional actor who has chosen a career in theatre for youth and families. They are here because they believe in the infinite potential of every child.  They are skilled in bringing that potential out.

No other theatre camp in Central or South Texas gives campers the opportunity to become a part of an actual working professional theatre.  The Magik gives every child the opportunity to learn and absorb lessons taught by actors who perform ten shows a week for 40 weeks every year.  Our interns come to us from theatre and education departments all over the country. It’s one of the best places for children to learn about art while having fun at the same time.

Our programs are all designed to guide children in a creative process, a process that applies not only to art, but to science, math and other disciplines.  At The Magik Theatre we believe that actively encouraging a child’s creativity helps to create active, positive human beings. Camp Showbiz is also about having fun, making new friends, and learning how to work together as a team.  Theatre is a collaborative art form.   That’s what makes it so unique.  Creating and performing a play, a skit, a musical, or a song takes learning how to work with others, how to contribute in a positive way, how to communicate, how to think out of the box, and ultimately how to put your creative ideas into a coherent piece of work.  All of these things are common to almost everything we do in life. It’s what CAMP SHOWBIZ is all about.

Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to work with your wonderful children.  We do not take your trust lightly.  In fact, we promise to do everything we can to make your child’s experience at The Magik Theatre something that he or she will treasure for the rest of their lives.
