One of the greatest challenges schools face today is providing students with a complete and balanced education under the constraints of increasingly limited budgets. Many districts have had to cut programs. The most frequent casualties? Art, music, dance, and theatre.
As San Antonio's only full-service, professional repertory company, we understand the power of live theatre and its ability to create new worlds - to transform literature into something that lives and breathes. We at Magik feel a responsibility to ensure these experiences for the children of our community; in short, to keep the arts in education. That's why we established Tickets to Literacy in 1996.
The Magik Theatre’s Tickets to Literacy Program makes it possible for child-care centers, pre-kindergarten programs, and elementary schools in San Antonio to sponsor trips to the theatre when they lack the funding themselves. Through this subsidy program we offer free and significantly discounted tickets to schools planning field trips so their students can see a performance at The Magik Theatre.
We value each free ticket at $10.00. With funding through gifts and grants and City and County contracts totaling $37,180 last year, Tickets to Literacy enabled 7,436 children from schools in low-income areas of San Antonio to attend a performance at The Magik Theatre for free. If the cost of transportation puts field trips beyond schools’ reach they can also use Tickets to Literacy funds to bring our local touring program Magik on the Road to their facility.
Our ultimate goal is to be able to bring all children to the Magik, regardless of ability to pay. To this end, we reach out every year to a growing number of government sources, foundations, corporations, and individuals to garner new support for Tickets to Literacy.
